What Questions Can a Digital Forensic Analyst Answer?

  • Where was a cell phone located during a specific time or time frame?

  • What cell towers was a phone registered to when a specific text message or photo was sent?

  • Who created a file, and was the date-time stamp altered after the file was created?

  • Was a file or document stolen?

  • What incriminating text messages, photos, or other evidence exist on a device?

  • What text messages, photos, documents, emails, or other data were deleted that can now be recovered?

How Can a Digital Forensic Analyst Help You Find What You’re Looking For?

A forensic analyst is specifically trained to identify, collect, preserve, and analyze data from computers, hard drives, mobile phones, and other digital storage devices.

This typically involves making a forensic image of a device and analyzing the image, not the actual device. A forensic image is a read-only, exact copy of the device. This is done to preserve the integrity of the data, to prevent any unauthorized changes to the data during the forensic investigation, and to make it possible for any findings to be accepted in court.

After imaging a device and gathering all of the data from it, a forensic analyst will thoroughly analyze the data. A good analyst knows how to follow a data trail, what to look for, and where to find it.

The analyst will look at data that is not readily visible to a user or even to the device itself. As a result, an analyst can find deleted data, including deleted text messages, photos, documents, emails, and more. An analyst also has the ability to uncover hidden data and metadata, or data about the data.

During the forensics analysis, an analyst will often look for information that supports or refutes a claim or witness statement. Other times, the analyst will look for evidence of deleted data, intellectual property theft, or a crime.

Once all of the data from a device has been analyzed, the analyst creates a detailed report listing their findings and analysis. A good forensic analyst will always ensure that his or her analysis and reporting is court-ready and easy to follow.
